UPIN in Medical Billing
UPIN stands for Unique Physician Identification Number, a former identification number used by Medicare to track healthcare providers.
UPIN in Medical Billing Explained
In medical billing, the UPIN system was replaced by the National Provider Identifier (NPI), but it was originally used to identify doctors and healthcare providers in the Medicare system. UPINs were required on all Medicare claims before being phased out.
For example, older Medicare claims might still reference a provider’s UPIN, but new claims now use the NPI.
