APN in Medical Billing

APN stands for Advanced Practice Nurse, a healthcare provider who is licensed to perform many of the same duties as a physician, such as prescribing medications and diagnosing illnesses.

APN in Medical Billing Explained

APNs, including nurse practitioners (NPs) and certified nurse midwives (CNMs), often bill for services separately under their own National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. These providers can work independently or under the supervision of a physician and are reimbursed for the care they provide, often at lower rates than physicians.

For example, an APN may bill for a patient’s office visit and medical treatment using their own NPI.
